The truth: Most people know little to nothing about pelvic floor PT. Even when they are referred to a physical therapist for pelvic floor therapy they often arrive at their first appointment having no idea what it will entail. As your pelvic floor physical therapist for life, I would like to complete this first blog as an introduction to your first appointment with me. Probably one of the most important facts that I want you to know is that when I treat you I'll be looking at a whole lot more than just your pelvic floor. I find that it is much more effective to look at you in the context of your life, the context of your whole biomechanics and orthopedic picture, and then finally assess how those things have affected your pelvic floor and how we can maximize the function of you as a whole. That is what makes this care expert level.
So here's what you can expect. We will start with a conversation. We really need to get to the root of the problem as you see it and go through the history of the issue. Many patients who come to physical therapy have been dealing with these issues for years, often with little answers. After we both feel comfortable with the amount of information that we have about your main complaints, we will start your physical examination. This physical examination will likely include a full orthopedic exam, looking at your pelvic girdle, low back, upper quarter, and lower quarter. I will also look at your breathing patterns as they are intimately connected with the functioning of your pelvic floor. Finally, we will complete your pelvic floor exam in order to fully understand how those muscles and tissues are functioning. Pelvic floor physical therapy does not only involve pelvic floor exercises, in fact, much of the time my therapy style is very manually based and hands-on. So come to this first appointment with an open mind, worries or reservations you may have, and goals you would like to achieve. I am here for you, to help you feel your best and start living life to the fullest.
